Run cold water while using it
Cold water keeps grease solid so it moves through the disposal. Run the water before, during and for a short time after grinding.
Don't put these down the disposal
Avoid fibrous food like celery strings, coffee grounds, eggshells, grease and bones. Hard or stringy items can jam the blades.
Clean it occasionally
Grind a few ice cubes with a little dish soap and cold water to clean the blades. Citrus peels can freshen the smell, but don't rely on them to clear a clog.
Reset it before calling for help
Many disposals have a reset button on the bottom of the unit. Turn off power first, then check for jams before pressing reset.
